Change in the automotive and energy sectors is accelerating, driven by technological advancements that address the urgent need for sustainable solutions, and greater consumer empowerment.

Vehicle to Grid technology is just one of the key technologies. It will bring energy prices down for consumers, help integrate renewables in the energy mix, and finally make car owners active participants in the Energy Transition.

But innovations like V2G only work to their full potential with the right IT. triPica, a Paris-based SaaS Customer Engagement and Monetisation platform, in partnership with Munich-based Smart Charging company The Mobility House, created the billing layer for Renault’s landmark Mobilize V2G solution, launched for the new Renault 5 E-Tech.

“This launch was a huge milestone for the French automotive and energy sectors,” said triPica CEO Mathieu Horn. “And as the German energy market modernises, it’s going to be transformative for the German automotive sector as well.”

Vehicle-to-Grid: A Game Changer for Energy and Mobility

V2G technology allows electric vehicles (EVs) to not only draw power from the grid but also send it back, creating a bi-directional energy flow.

  • For EV Owners: V2G enables EV owners to become active participants in the energy transition. By selling excess energy stored in their car batteries back to the grid during peak demand, they can significantly reduce their energy bills and even generate revenue.
  • For the Grid: V2G provides much-needed flexibility to the grid, helping to integrate renewable energy sources like wind and solar more efficiently. EVs essentially become mobile energy storage units, absorbing excess renewable energy when available and releasing it when needed, stabilizing the grid and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
  • For Energy Retailers: V2G creates new revenue streams and opportunities for energy retailers. By managing the flow of energy to and from EVs, they can optimize grid load, offer dynamic pricing, and engage consumers in innovative energy programs.
  • For the Auto Industry: V2G offers the possibility to conceive a new generation of EVs that appeal to climate-conscious consumers looking for ways to reduce their energy bills.

triPica and The Mobility House: Powering the V2G Revolution

The success of any V2G initiative hinges on a robust and adaptable billing and CRM platform that shows EV owner exactly what they are earning or consuming in real time. triPica’s platform provides the backbone for monetizing the electricity reinjected into the grid, ensuring transparency, control, and flexibility for both consumers and energy retailers. For Renault’s Mobilize solution, The Mobility House provides the technology and services for trading excess vehicle charge back to energy markets.

"V2G is a key solution to the challenges in the energy and mobility transition towards green electricity," adds triPica CEO Mathieu Horn. “EV owners now have the power to contribute to the energy transition. It also lowers the cost of charging their cars.”

The German Opportunity: Smart Meters and the Energy Transition

Germany has one key disadvantage: the slow rollout of smart meters. The real-time data they provide to retailers is essential for giving end-users the real-time visibility into energy consumption, and facilitating the bi-directional energy flow required for V2G.

Germany's commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure, coupled with the urgent need to reduce energy costs and integrate renewables, will accelerate smart meter deployment, which is expected to be complete by the early 2030s.

triPica: Ready for the German Market

triPica, which has provided billing and CRM for Hanover Stadwerke Enercity since 2018, is well-positioned to capitalize on the German opportunity. Its platform is fully adaptable to local grid requirements and regulations.

In Germany, triPica can help energy retailers thrive in the new energy landscape, with rapid deployment of preconfigured models, immediately lower service costs (down by 40%) ahead of Smart Meter adoption, and freedom from Legacy IT platforms that aren’t ready for the coming changes in Energy markets.

Germany’s energy future is bright

Beyond V2G, the future looks bright. Modern CRM, coupled with real-time data from Smart Meters, bi-directional Home Solar will finally make sense as customers get rewarded for the energy they produce, in real time. This will improve other innovative offers, such as true dynamic pricing, virtual batteries, and full integration of renewables in Germany’s energy mix – which will increasingly mitigate the need for coal.
